Simi Valley is a city in Southern California, close to Los Angeles. Established in 1969, it lies west of the San Fernando Valley, nestled between the Santa Susana Pass, the Simi Hills, and the Santa Susana Mountains. Consistently ranked as one of the safest cities in the United States, Simi Valley is known for its strong machinery and metalworking industries.

The city is well connected by the Simi Valley Freeway and by rail, with both Metrolink and Amtrak trains providing easy access to Los Angeles, San Jose, and other California destinations. One of its top attractions is the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, a must-visit landmark rich in history and panoramic mountain views.

Perhaps the most charming local detail is the smiling-face mark seen from the highway on sunny mornings. Keep an eye out while driving through the valley and you might spot it yourself.

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library serves as both the official library and the final resting place of the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Reagan. Designed by Hugh Stubbins and Associates, it is located about 40 miles (64 km) northwest of downtown Los Angeles and 15 miles (24 km) west of Chatsworth.

It is the largest presidential library administered by the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). Visitors can view President Reagan’s burial site on the library grounds and explore 24 exhibition galleries, including the impressive Air Force One Pavilion, which houses the actual aircraft used by six U.S. presidents. The experience is truly unforgettable.

You can also relax on the terrace café, enjoy light bites, and take in sweeping views of Simi Valley.

Strathearn Historical Park and Museum

Strathearn Historical Park and Museum is another highlight in Simi Valley. It is both a California Historical Landmark and listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

The park showcases a fascinating collection of historic buildings, including the 1924 Montgomery Children’s Playhouse, the 1902 St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, the original Simi Valley Library, and the 1888 Colony House. All of these are preserved by the Simi Valley Historical Society, which manages the site to share the area’s cultural heritage.

Local Shopping and Dining

Simi Valley also offers plenty of vintage shops and thrift stores filled with antiques, retro treasures, and nostalgic finds.

A local favorite is Firehouse Café, a cozy spot filled with firefighter memorabilia. Their French toast is especially popular with locals who line up for breakfast as soon as the doors open.

For something sweet, Dr. Conkey’s Candy and Coffee is perfect for a coffee break, while The Baker’s Daughters serves delicious pastries baked fresh daily. Don’t miss Fishy Finds for quirky gifts and collectibles, and stop by Green Acres Market for fresh local meats and produce.
